General Information


Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is a country in northern Africa, bordered to the north and east by the Mediterranean Sea and to the south-east by Libya (459 km) to the west by Algeria (965 km). Its capital city is Tunis. The area of the Republic of Tunisia is 163.610 km 2 

Tunisia played important roles in ancient history since the time of the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians and the Amazigh, the Vandals and the Romans and was  known as the Africa Province during the Roman rule and the entire continent was named after it. The Muslims opened it in the seventh century and founded the city of Kiruna in  the year 50 AH to be the first Islamic city in North Africa. Under the Ottoman Empire, it was called "the Tunisian Aleyalah." It fell under the French occupation in 1881, then it gained independence in 1956 to become officially known as the Tunisian Kingdom at the end of the era of Muhammad al-Amin. With the announcement of the Tunisian Republic on July 25, 1957, leader Habib Bourguiba became its first president 

The latter was followed in the Presidency of the Republic by Zine El Abidine Ben Ali who acceded to power through a coup in 1987, and his rule continued until 2011, when he fled during the Tunisian revolution. Tunisia has relied on export-oriented industries in the process of liberalization and privatization of the economy, which its  GDP growth has averaged 5% since early 1990.

Tunisia has close and historical ties with both the United States and the European Union and has several advanced partnership agreements with the European Union which is the first customer of Tunisia and the  strong economic alley. Tunisia is also a member of the Arab League and the African Union. Tunisia has established close relations with France in particular, through economic cooperation and industrial modernization, and privatization programs. The Government's approach to the conflict between Israel and Palestine has made it as a broker in the field of diplomacy in the Middle East and a large contributor to the imposition of peace in the world via its troops deployed in areas of conflict and the United Nations.

Republic of Tunisia is divided administratively into six development zones, divided by 24 states as follows:

  • North East: the state of Bizerte, Tunis, Ariana Governorate, State of Manouba, Ben Arous, and Zaghouan, Nabeul.
  • Northwest: Jendouba, State of Beja, State of Kef, Siliana
  • Middle east: the state of Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia, Sfax
  • Midwest: the state of Kairouan, Kasserine Governorate, Sidi Bouzid Governorate.
  • South-east: the state of Gabes, Medenine, Tataouine Governorate.
  • Southwest: the state of Gafsa, Tozeur, Kebili Governorate
